Core & More

Reconnecting to Your Core & Body Postpartum

Being a mom to 2 little humans I have experienced first hand the changes that occur to a woman’s body during pregnancy. I have also had both a natural delivery as well as a caesarian section and can relate to the struggles that each of those poses to the body when it comes to rejoining the world of movement and exercise.

Being a physiotherapist with a special interest in women’s health has given me a greater appreciation of our body’s core system. As women, we definitely do not know enough about the core and how it is affected during pregnancy and postpartum.

The core is made up of the diaphragm, pelvic floor, some of the abdominal muscles, and some of the back muscles. All of which are affected during pregnancy.

What are some of the changes that occur during pregnancy?

As your belly grows and expands its causes certain abdominal muscles to stretch out and lengthen while others manage to stay relatively unchanged.

The diaphragm gets squished by babies body and so breathing starts to take place more in your upper chest. And the pelvic floor goes from supporting just your pelvic organs to your pelvic organs plus a baby watermelon.

Your center of gravity and posture changes throughout pregnancy to help your body cope with the blossoming belly. This in turn throws off your balance.

I am a firm believer that ladies need special attention in the postnatal period so that they can rehab their core and body in a way that prevents all kinds of injuries and issues later on in life. Lower back pain, incontinence, and pain with sexual intercourse are usually what women struggle with as they age; but with proper attention and rehabilitation of all the imbalances postnatally we can avoid and should avoid them.

How can I get started on my postnatal fitness journey?

Core and More is a 6-week exercise program developed to focus on regaining core control, balance, and stability, and improving general body strength. All of which is needed to progress back into your regular exercise routine or start for the first time. I draw mainly from yoga but will also use various other exercise forms to get you reconnected to your postpartum body.
